Professional Opportunities and Job Skills

In today's workforce it's extremely important to be multifaceted in many areas. Being an interdisciplinary student, how do you think you can use this in your professionsl life? What are some of the weak/strong points that you've had to face in your line of work and how has your IDS studies played a role in your chosen field? What are some of the things that could help you imporve on your weaker points? Nowadays many potential employers are looking for interns to get their foot in the door. Internships and other organizations can help improve your interdisciplinary skills. For instance, I have had the chance to intern at a news station and in doing so, I have been able to broaden my levels of understanding. When you typically start as an intern somewhere, they have you work bit and pieces of everything within the company so you can have an understanding. Being an intern has helped me improve my weaknesses and given my interdisciplinary skills a good challange. Have you had a similiar experience whether it was an internship or organization?

  1. Being an interdisciplinary student has so many great benefits. In my case, I chose to have 3 minors, instead of two areas and a minor. So, with having the three minors, I really could get an internship in each one. However, I would really only like to get an internship with a production company, since it goes right along with my ultimate goal. But either way, it is really great to be able to study more than one field, because it all around makes you a more knowledgeable person. I can use my knowledge of political science and communications when working for a production company. I can't say that I have gotten any real life opportunities to find out my strengths and weaknesses yet because I haven't had an internship or done anything in any organizations yet. I do know from high school that I have many strengths on the technical and talent sides of film making.

  3. Kassi,

You'll have plenty of opportunities throughout college and post-graduation to find out your strengths and weaknesses in your areas. If you wish to tackle a part-time job while you're taking classes, you could even apply somewhere that has to do with one or more of your three areas. Everyone needs money, and gaining experience is an added bonus.
